Welcome to our cost break-down per city. The prices listed are the total cost for two adults, unless a per person or per day cost is also provided. All costs have been converted from local currency to USD at the time of purchase with exchange rates reflected. We visited Pogradec in both 2025 and in 2026. We compare costs of both years.

HOUSING

HOUSING:

Both of our apartments were reserved on the Airbnb platform. In 2025 we did not know the area and chose the apartment based on price and relation to the beach. Inside the apartment was spacious and comfortable, but it was located on the first floor in the commercial zone. We sat in a fishbowl with no quiet or privacy for a month. In 2026 we chose an apartment on the 6th floor with a private terrace. We booked 2 months out during high season so choice in price and quality were limited.

An individual's perception of home may differ from hostels to luxury hotels, and the choice may change depending upon the country or the size of city. Right now, we use a combination of short-term rental platforms including AirBNB, Hotels.com, VRBO, Expedia, and Booking.com. Our accommodation choices are mostly 1 bedroom/1 bath apartments or hotel rooms within a modest budget category while living in small cities and big towns from 1 day to 1 month.

2025 total cost $1332.00 ($45/night)
2026 total cost $1835.00 ($63/night)

TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION

Content creators for travel information report the category of transportation very differently. Some include the cost of arriving into the new country or city and some do not. In full transparency, we will report both the local transportation cost and the long-distance arrival cost. The long-distance arrival cost will not be calculated into the per day cost since people will arrive to this destination from all over the world.

TRANSPORTATION:

Arrival: Pogradec is located in the eastern side of Albania. Both years we traveled via taxi from the Albanian capital Tirana. In 2025 our door-to-door taxi with tip was $95.00. In 2026 it was $100.00 because the currency exchange was different. There is a bus terminal in this town if budget is a concern.

Local: Pogradec is easily walkable from one end to the other. We enjoyed the promenade along Lake Ohrid during the day and evening. We rented bikes in 2025 to ride to the neighboring town ($8.00). In 2026 we took a taxi to the town of Korçe and took more taxis to and from the Annual Beer Festival ($93.00).

2025 total local cost $8.00
($4.00/person)
2026 total local cost $93.00
($46.50/person)

FOOD-MARKETS & DINING OUT

Everyone needs to eat. Grocery store shopping and restaurant dining are viewed differently by content creators. Some will add restaurant costs into their entertainment budget. In this category we will include all grocery store shopping and dining out expenses.

FOOD

Travel through Albania allowed us to get out of our comfort zone on food and try some traditional Balkan foods that differed greatly from our American foods. Pictured here from 2025 is the Flia which is described as a cheese pancake and Qofte Me Maz which is meatballs floating in cream sauce. In 2025: We spent $404 on meals out and $331 in groceries. This was unusually low because we were ill for a week and ate soup several times. In 2026: We spent $932 on meals out and $311 in groceries. 2026 was so much more expensive for meals out because we did a lot of socializing with friends around food and often chose to pick up the tab. With the friends we shared in morning coffees, birthday feasts, a beer festival, a fancy dinner, and some meals/drinks at the beach.

2025 total cost $735.00 ($26.00/day)
2026 total cost $1243.00 ($43.00/day)

ENTERTAINMENT

Entertainment is the third most expensive part of travel behind accommodations and transportation. This category includes entrance fees, tours, excursions, and shows. Food tours and dinner theater will also be part of this category because an entertainment is added to the food experience. Generally, slow travel entertainment costs will to be less expensive than the holiday vacations.

ENTERTAINMENT:

In 2025 we enjoyed a relaxing time at the lake renting beach beds and a paddleboat. The museum and live music were also fun. In 2026, we had many more entertainment expenses while visiting with friends. For example, we spent a couple nights in a hotel when we went to the Korçe Beer Festival ($207.00). We did a tour of the Rakia Distillery with a private language interpreter ($43.00). We watched more live music with cocktails. We rented some more beach beds with snacks.

total cost $40.00 ($20.00/person)
total cost $369.00 ($184.50/person)

MEDICAL

Plan for the worst and hope for the best. No one likes to be ill hurt, but medical expenses should be part of the estimated budget for any traveler. We purchase an international medical insurance plan whenever we travel to cover catastrophic issues, but we also budget for our monthly medications. Anything purchased in a pharmacy will be included in this category on the month the purchase was experienced.

MEDICAL:

We visited Pogradec in August 2025 and had several more months of travel through Europe, so we each bought 3 months of our daily meds at the local pharmacy. We just showed our paper prescriptions and were given our new supply. When we visited in 2026 we only needed a few medications, then we both got our teeth cleaned at a local dentist ($25.00 each).

2025 total cost $93.00
2026 total cost $85.00

PERSONAL AND MISCELLANEOUS

This is a category that should be expected in any budget but can look wildly different for each person. This category includes everything from personal maintenance to things that cannot be classified in the other categories such as haircuts, massage, manicure, clothing, souvenirs, or household items to feel more comfortable in the accommodation. Some travelers or content creators omit this cost from budget reporting because it is so personalized.

PERSONAL/MISC.:

Our time in Pogradec in 2025 required us to buy a new computer mouse and batteries. We both needed haircuts ($12.50 each). That was the extent of our expenses.

We had more personal expenses in 2026 starting with the purchase of a hot water pot for use at our accommodations. We both had haircuts at $12.50 each and bought a new shirt.

2026 total cost $62.00
2025 total cost $45.00

RECURRING COSTS

These costs are dependent upon the person or couple. People who maintain a home while traveling may incur more costs than people who sell everything for full-time travel. By analyzing your own budget before travel begins, you will better understand which line items can be omitted from life and which ones are constant, permanent costs.
