As I have previously stated in this line of posts, we continually remain vigilant and try to stay up on regional news. We also browse online publications and watch live podcasts on YouTube from residents. There have been growing issues globally with a backlash against over-tourism in many large cities, mostly in specific countries. Spain is arguably the leader in this push-back and it has spread further and gathered more support. We have monitored this rise in disgruntled feelings and are very conscious and aware of our own impact, or effect on the local citizens in the places we stay and visit. The gentrification is not lost on us by any means, and it is a constant moral question we pose to each other.
Because of our awareness of the growing animosity, and scenes from Alicante, Spain specifically, several months ago we changed our original destination of Alicante to Malaga in Southern Spain. The latest development is that in the past few days an elderly Spaniard male was reportedly attacked by three Moroccan immigrants and severely beaten and hospitalized. In response, a few semi-organized groups have called for a “Hunt for Migrants” type of crusade. There have been clashes between three sides of the equation: large groups of African migrants, anti-migrant gangs, and police trying to keep the peace. This battle has been taking place in Southern Spain, within an hour or two of where we wished to stay and explore.
With saddened hearts, we have decided to pivot and change direction. Spain was a top destination for myself, as it is the possible origin of some of my ancestors, according to my Great Grandmother and a DNA test.
Where will we go? The compass is spinning, and the clock is ticking! This is another exciting adventure for us. Stay tuned and know we are not only trying to remain safe but also respect the emotions and impact on the people and places we live.
